The Life and Teachings of Thirumoolar
Thirumoolar is one of the 18 Siddhars, or enlightened masters, who are revered as the founders and propagators of Siddha Yoga. According to legend, Thirumoolar was originally a disciple of Nandi, the divine bull of Lord Shiva. He was sent to earth by Nandi to spread the teachings of Shiva among humans. He assumed the body of a cowherd named Moolan and lived in a village near Chidambaram, a sacred town in Tamil Nadu.
One day, he witnessed the death of his fellow cowherd and decided to enter his body to revive him. However, he could not return to his own body as it was taken away by some people who thought he was dead. Thus, he remained in the new body and continued his spiritual practice. He meditated in a cave for 3,000 years and composed one verse every year. These verses became the Thirumoolar Thirumanthiram, which means "the sacred mantra of Thirumoolar".
The Thirumoolar Thirumanthiram is considered to be a direct revelation from Lord Shiva himself. It contains the essence of all the scriptures and sciences of yoga. It covers topics such as cosmology, metaphysics, ethics, psychology, physiology, anatomy, alchemy, medicine, astrology, and mysticism. It also reveals the secrets of Kundalini Shakti, the divine energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine and can be awakened through yoga practices. The Thirumoolar Thirumanthiram teaches how to attain the ultimate goal of yoga, which is union with Shiva.
